Die neuralen Zelladhäsionsmoleküle bilden eine Familie eng verwandter Zelloberflächen-Glykoproteine, von denen angenommen wird, dass sie eine Rolle bei der Embryogenese, der Entwicklung und den kontaktvermittelten Interaktionen zwischen Nervenzellen spielen.

Das CD56-Antigen (NCAM) umfasst vier Haupt-Isoformen, die durch differentielles Spleißen der RNA-Transkripte eines einzigen Gens entstehen, das sich auf Chromosom 5 befindet.

Das Antigen wird auf Neuronen, Astrozyten, Schwann-Zellen, NK-Zellen und einer Untergruppe aktivierter T-Lymphozyten exprimiert.
